L A Moore Ltd’s contract at the Temple Back Fire Station involved the demolition of part of the existing fire station complex.  The fire station remained in operation during the course of the demolition works.  The site is located in Bristol’s busy city centre and is closely surrounded by commercial buildings in continuous use.

The section of fire station demolished was primarily two storey and comprised a steel frame encased in concrete.  The frame supported a lightweight steel framed roof and purlins with a metal deck roof covering finished with felt.  The intermediate and ground floor levels were concrete and the walls were generally brick and block construction.

The redundant section of the building was demolished down to ground level including the ground floor slab and foundations.  The ground floor slab was broken out down to a maximum 200mm, and foundations down to a maximum of 600mm, below the top of the ground floor slab level.  Asbestos removal was carried out by our trained operators as per our Asbestos Management System.

We supplied a crusher to recycle the masonry and tarmac materials arising from the demolition.  These were stockpiled on site for re-use by the client.  Asphalt was mixed with other masonry materials to produce a 6F2 type material as specified by the Highways Works and WRAP.

The team were awarded green cards for demolishing the building in an extremely safe and controlled manner when in an area of close proximity and high risk to the public and fire service.
