Winfrith Demolition

Our contract at Winfrith involved the demolition of twelve buildings at Winfrith Technology Park, Wool for the Homes and Communities Agency.

The demolished buildings ranged from 1-storey to 5-storey and were contained within the larger technology park site.  The majority were former offices and laboratories and included a former social club, crèche and medical centre.  The rest of the buildings in the technology park remained in use throughout the demolition works, with some being in very close proximity to the demolished structures. Our site supervisor worked closely with the tenants of the building to be retained to minimise disruption during the works.

Some of the buildings contained asbestos. Our trained operators removed all non-licensed asbestos, following our asbestos management system. We used the services of a specialist subcontractor to remove any licensed asbestos. Once all asbestos had been removed we obtained air clearance certificates before continuing with the rest of the demolition works.

Our demolition team soft stripped the buildings, removing all fixtures and fittings for recycling. We demolished the high level buildings using a high reach excavator with a pulveriser attachment.  The low level buildings were demolished using 30, 45 and 52 ton excavators.  All buildings were demolished to ground level, then the foundations were broken out with hammer attachments.

As the works progressed our demolition team separated the arisings into separate waste streams for re-use or recycling. We supplied an on-site crusher to recycle masonry and tarmac  into a 6F2 type material as specified by the Highways Works and WRAP.  Some of the crushed material was re-used on site to fill the voids created when the foundations were removed. The remainder of the crushed material was removed from site and re-used by local construction companies.

Finally our team created a level surface across the demolition areas and left the area in a clean and tidy condition.
