Quantock House Demolition Contract

Our contract at Quantock House Taunton included asbestos removal, soft strip, and demolition. Quantock House was a seven storey municipal building that previously housed Government departments, before falling vacant a few years ago.

The construction site was located in the centre of Taunton, adjacent to a multi-storey carpark, existing businesses, residential housing and a busy road.

Due to the number of buildings very close to the demolition we held monthly meetings with local residents, businesses and interested parties. At all meetings we received very positive feedback on the progress of the works and the way the demolition was being carried out.

Demolition Works

First of all we removed all asbestos from the building. Our trained operators removed the non-licensed asbestos as defined in our Asbestos Management System. Specialist sub-contractor Abbey Contracting Ltd removed the licensed asbestos.

Once clean air certificates had been issued the building was soft-stripped. As the work progressed operatives sorted and stored all waste by type. Once soft-stripping was completed the building was demolished mechanically using a 120-tonne high reach excavator, as well as smaller 20 and 30-tonne excavators. The high reach excavator moved progressively into the building removing windows and reducing the overall height of the building from the roof level down. Demolition was carried out so that the building debris was pulled away from the site boundaries towards the centre of our working area. As a precaution we fitted protective barriers to the perimeter of the site to minimise harm to the public and existing buildings close to the demolition.

We supplied a mobile crusher with qualified operators to recycle masonry arising from the demolition.  Most of the resulting crushed material was used to back-fill voids created when demolishing the foundations. The remainder was stock-piled on site for use by the client.

During the project we supplied vehicles and skips to remove all waste to licensed recycling facilities.

We recycled 99.7% of all materials on this project.
